Response letter from cgi

Date: 2002/02/06 22:28

Q:
Hi Peter,
Thanks for taking the time to read my question. I am a cgi wanna be and I
have been asked to create a web page where data is collected and a file is
generated. To my excitment I found
http://bignosebird.com/carchive/bnbform.shtml where a templte cgi script
and all of the components are there to use. After a few hours of setting
and editing the script, I have got it to work. But, I have ran across one
problem which has stumped me. The script works fine and I can generate the
output file no problem. The one issue I have which I think is due to our
mail server configuration is the resporse letter feature. If I use a email
address which internal the cgi generates the auto response but if use an
extrenal email address no response letter is sent. Thanks for any help you
can give. I hope I explained that well enough.
A:
I can not be 100% sure, but I can guess what the problem is, if it is a
problem at all.

Some mail servers are configured to drop mails silently that come with a
From: address that does not belong to their realm. This is to prevent
spamming. And that is the reason I wrote "if it is a problem at all". I
think all mail server ought to be configured that way.

However in your case such a strict configuration may make life more
difficult.

Regards,
Peter
